Is it actually better to give than to receive?

Whatup Reader!

Let’s talk about selling. Or to put it another way, receiving.

I had the honor of speaking at the CPTA annual Conference this past Saturday. During my presentation one of the attendees asked for a simplified approach to using Instagram for business. I hit her with what you’d expect: Consistency, competency, specificity, authenticity, and then I added, “You’ve got to be willing to ask for the sale. You’ve got to be willing to talk about your services.”

Despite the fact that I think more than 50% of the people in that audience ran their own clinic, I could tell that that last part wasn’t an immediate head nod like the rest of the items on the list.

If you’re reading this and you’re a physical therapist, I know you know what I’m talking about.

If you’re reading this and you were raised and socialized female, I know you know what I’m talking about.

“It’s better to give than to receive.”

A nice thought, but an incomplete message, as is pointed out in one of my favorite books, The Go-Giver.

I have no issue if you believe that it is better to give than receive, but I think it's worth pointing out that you’re setting yourself up for failure if you don’t acknowledge that it’s impossible to keep giving if you’re not open to receiving.

Real talk, I’m speaking just as much to myself as I am to you.

Selling has absolutely become exponentially easier over the years, but in general I continue to work on my ability to receive. I’m still working on my receptivity to receiving.

I’m sharing this with you because 1 – you’re my people, and 2 – because I just finished listening to The Go-Giver (I assign it as “homework” prior the start of each new round of the Intensive) and every time I listen to it, something new stands out.

This is not the first time that the law of receptivity has resonated the most with me (read: I've identified it as the thing I need to work on the most) when listening to The Go-Giver, but this time, for the first time, its direct relationship to selling became super clear.

So, today perhaps I leave you with more questions than answers.

How is your relationship with selling?

How is your relationship with receiving?

Would love to hear your answers if the spirit moves you.

Maestro out.

Do the thing.
